Is the price right?
Alpha School, founded by MacKenzie Price, runs a model that challenges some of education’s most sacred assumptions.
Students spend significantly less time in structured academic instruction than in most traditional schools.
Mornings focus on AI-supported, mastery-based academics.
Afternoons are devoted to communication, leadership, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and fitness.
According to their most recent NWEA MAP Growth results, students are averaging at the 99th percentile.
Not top 10 percent.
Top 1 percent.
More interestingly, they are reportedly showing accelerated growth even at the top of the scale.
That matters.
That is structural design.
If a school is producing both top-of-scale achievement and continued acceleration, that is not incremental improvement. Now let’s be clear. Alpha is private. It controls admissions, staffing, and culture. Public schools operate under different constraints. Demographics matter. Context matters.
But growth at the top of the scale is not just a demographics story.
It is a design story.
So the real question for public education is not, “Why aren’t we Alpha?”
The real question is:
"If rigorous standards mastery can coexist with authentic, real-world learning experiences, what architectural elements make that possible?"
We do not need to choose between rigor and relevance. Our pacing guides do not have to compete with experiential learning. We may need to rethink how we structure time, feedback, pacing, and application.
I believe public schools can replicate meaningful portions of these results.
Not overnight.
Not without friction.
Not without challenging some sacred norms.
But it will require small, disciplined pilots. Clear metrics. Transparent reporting. Access to the right tools. And the courage to question assumptions in service of students.
Innovation is not copying.
It is translating.
